Elite Runner Mary Cain Says Nike Bus Forced Her to Lose Weight and Ignored Her Self-Harm
Cain said coach Alberto Salazar, who is currently suspended for doping allegations, would publicly shame her for not losing weight
Runner Mary Cain, once the "fastest girl in America," says that her quondam motorbus at the Nike Oregon Project forced her to lose weight and ignored her acts of self-harm.
Cain, 23, spoke out confronting passenger vehicle Alberto Salazar in a video for The New York Times, calling the plan "an emotionally and physically abusive system."

"I joined Nike considering I wanted to be the all-time female athlete ever. Instead, I was emotionally and physically abused by a arrangement designed by Alberto and endorsed past Nike," she said. In an email to the Times, Salazar reportedly denied many of the charges.

Cain said that she started having suicidal thoughts and began cutting herself. She said, tearing up, that people at NOP saw her cut herself and "nobody really did annihilation or said annihilation."

Her breaking point, she said, came in 2015 afterward a race where she underperformed.
"Afterwards in that location was a thunderstorm going on. Half the track was under one tent and Alberto yelled at me in front of everybody else at the see. He told me that I had clearly gained 5 lbs. earlier the race," she said. "It was as well that night that I told Alberto and our sports psych that I was cutting myself and they pretty much told me that they just wanted to go to bed."
Salazar, who was suspended past the United States Anti-Doping Agency in September for four years for violating anti-doping rules, denied many of Cain'due south allegations to The New York Times, maxim he had supported her health and welfare. In a statement shared with PEOPLE, Nike said that they will investigate Cain's allegations, but claimed that she had expressed interest in to coming back to NOP.
"These are deeply troubling allegations which have not been raised by Mary or her parents before. Mary was seeking to rejoin the Oregon Project and Alberto'due south team as recently equally Apr of this year and had not raised these concerns as part of that procedure. Cain addressed that claim in a series of tweets on Friday morning, explaining that she "wanted closure."
"I wanted closure, wanted an apology for never helping me when I was cut, and in my own, sad, never-fully healed heart, wanted Alberto to withal take me dorsum. I still loved him. Because when we permit people emotionally pause us, we crave more than anything their very approval," she wrote. But this summer, she said, they fell out of touch and when the doping allegations against Salazar came out, "that made the rose colour spectacles finally autumn off."
Cain has merely raced a handful of times in the three years since she left NOP, though she is first to return to professional running with a new coach. She said that "there is a systemic crisis in women's sports and at Nike" that "needs to change."
Cain said "we demand more women in ability."
"I got caught in a system designed past and for men which destroys the bodies of young girls," she said. "I genuinely do have hope for the sport and I plan to exist running for many years to come, and so part of the reason I'k doing this now is I want to terminate this chapter and I want to start a new 1."
